What is diabetes?

Diabetes develops when the body has a problem with a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps move sugar (known as glucose) The pancreas produces insulin. Diabetes can develop when your body doesn't produce enough insulin and your body needs insulin to break down sugar for energy.

There are 2 types of Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes usually develops in children, teenagers and young adults

When cells in the pancreas that make insulin are destroyed, the body has no, or very little, insulin to move glucose from blood into body cell

Fasting levels beGlucose Level Guidelines: A normal non-diabetic person should have a glucose level of around 4.5 to 7.0 mmol/L (80 to 125 mg/dL). For diabetics
before meals target is 72 to 126 mg/dL (4.0 to 7.0 mmol.L)
Two hours after eating target is 90 to 180 mg/dL (5.0 to 10.0 mmol/L)

The only effective treatment, at present, is the injection of doses of insulin.
